People believe that vaccines are safe because they trust doctors and doctors say vaccines are safe.
There were several studies in Europe and the United States from the 1980s-1990s and we had qualified scientists and psychologists looking for autistic children in various groups of children. They were not looking for children that had received an Autism diagnosis they screened for children having symptoms of Autism. They found only a small number of children that would have received an Autism diagnosis.
We also had a broadening of diagnostic criteria and better awareness but that alone could not explain the massive increase that we have observed in the past 100 years. Autism rates increased 1000 fold from the 1930s to today. It appears that the growth began in the late seventies or early eighties.
It appears that Autism is becoming the most costly medical condition in the western world.
Recent UK studies found that it costs us more than Cancer or Heart Disease.[1]
We are talking about something that is having a greater economic impact than Diabetes, Heart Disease or Cancer or even some of these conditions combined.
It is not believable that something as large as Diabetes was overlooked for such a long time. The cases that may have been overlooked are people that might have felt different compared to their peers but only learned in adulthood that they may have been on the autistic spectrum. While these mild cases have contributed they were not driving the increase.
The cases of Autism that are having an economic impact are a clearly defined and unique disability with serious comorbidities such as intellectual disability and seizure disorders. They are not the unpopular kids that do not fit in.
How did something that was a rare disorder become the disability of our time and one of the most important medical conditions?
No one can really answer that question and it remains a mystery.
Vaccination had been a suspect because many parents had observed regression in Autism after their child had been vaccinated. Children in the 1930s might have received 3 or less vaccines doses and children today can receive as much as 70 vaccine doses.
So far we have not studied the impact of the childhood vaccination schedule. There is a lot of complex statistical analysis on what happens if you receive a certain vaccine or what happens if you get more of a certain vaccine ingredient but this tell us little about whether or not an expanding vaccine schedule could have contributed to the observed increase in Autism rates.
In 2014 a CDC scientist, responsible for the statistical analysis of some Autism studies admitted privately:
“I have great shame now when I meet families of kids with autism, because I have been part of the problem.”[2][3]
