5 G wireless telecommunications expansion: Public health and environmental implications. CL Russell Aug. 2018
5G Wireless Telecommunications Expansion: Public Health and Environmental Implications article, by Cindy Russell, just published in Environmental Research April 2018. It is a summary of the research. For a month you can access, print and save a PDF copy to your computer. After August 2, 2018 there will be a $40 fee. Important article to read and save as a resource for public outreach.
From the abstract: "It is argued that the addition of this added high frequency 5G radiation to an already complex mix of lower frequencies, will contribute to a negative public health outcome both from both physical and mental healthperspectives.“
Excerpt from abstract: "Precaution in the roll out of this new technology is strongly indicated. This article will review relevant electromagnetic frequencies, exposure standards and current scientific literature on the health implications of 2G, 3G, 4G exposure, including some of the available literature on 5G frequencies. The question of what constitutes a public health issue will be raised, as well as the need for a precautionary approach in advancing new wireless technologies."

SCORE: Verizon NY Settlement: Fiber Optics to Underserved Areas; Repair of the State Utility Networks — with an Assist from the IRREGULATORS. July 19th, 2018 | Bruce Kushnick | The Medium
"New Networks Institute (NNI) & the IRREGULATORS just helped to get 32,000 fiber optic lines installed by Verizon New York in underserved areas as well as have the state utility be required to do long needed repairs of the copper networks — that are still in use. The State claims that there are still 2.14 million ‘voice-only’ access lines in service. (Note: This number of copper-based access lines is low for multiple reasons.)
We estimate that this settlement is valued at $300 million to $1/2 billion in additional spending by Verizon in New York State over time.
In state after state, Verizon decided to simply use the state utilities as a cash cow to fund its other lines of business and let the copper networks deteriorate — and charge customers billions for upgraded fiber networks they never got. And while Verizon started to do ‘FiOS’ fiber-to-the-home, by 2010, the company moved the construction budgets to build out their wireless service. All of these cross-subsidies created massive artificial losses, resulting in more rate increases and an excuse to ‘shut off the copper’.
As described by long time telecom writer Karl Bode about the settlement:
“Verizon Forced to Repair Broadband Infrastructure It Has Literally Let Fall Apart. A new settlement requires Verizon to replace bad cable, defective equipment, and faulty back-up batteries — and to take down 64,000 double telephone poles or pole stumps.”
Our research and calls for an investigation started in 2010, and our reports, filings and analytical approach helped to initiate and was used in the investigation. We are mentioned in the decision (see below) and will be taking next steps on this as we filed to block this settlement agreement; it left out billions in cross-subsidies and customer overcharging."

Strong document by international experts on the health effects of RF/MW radiation.has just been released. Good one to use when asked for “the science.”

International Perspective on Health Effects of Low Intensity Non-Ionizing Radiation Thermal and non-thermal health effects of low intensity non-ionizing radiation Belpomme D, Hardell, L, Belyaev I, Burgio E, Carpenter DO. Thermal and non-thermal health effects of low intensity non-ionizing radiation: An international perspective. Environ Pollut. 2018 Jul 6; 242(Pt A):643-658. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2018.07.019.
From the abstract:
"Exposure to low frequency and radiofrequency electromagnetic fields at low intensities poses a significant health hazard that has not been adequately addressed by national and international organizations such as the World Health Organization…. The mechanism(s) responsible include induction of reactive oxygen species, gene expression alteration and DNA damage through both epigenetic and genetic processes….Unfortunately standards set by most national and international bodies are not protective of human health. This is a particular concern in children, given the rapid expansion of use of wireless technologies, the greater susceptibility of the developing nervous system, the hyperconductivity of their brain tissue, the greater penetration of radiofrequency radiation relative to head size and their potential for a longer lifetime exposure.

Following are some studies and reviews to share with people who are “on the fence” with regard to the health impacts of 5g and cell towers, and not convinced by the NTP or Ramazzini studies.

Evolving 5G Landscape Creates New RF Challenges An escalation in bandwidth, implementation of massive MIMO and beamsteering, and the need for high linearity are some of major considerations designers must weigh. July 24, 2018 | Ben Thomas, Scott Vasquez | Electronic Design

Technical article on some of the “challenges” of rolling out 5g.
"As with any major advance in communications technology, 5G presents a whole new set of technical RF challenges. These include:

    • Unprecedented bandwidth, with carriers up to 100 MHz wide in FR1 and 400 MHz in FR2.
    • Massive MIMO and beamsteering will be required in base stations to deliver multi-gigabit data rates.
    • Massive bandwidth and new waveforms will generate very high peak-to-power ratios and a need for high linearity.
There are also significant commercial challenges with 5G, due to the cost of upgrading infrastructure and user equipment. Manufacturers and operators will need to balance the cost and complexity of adding 5G RF content against the performance benefits. Those considerations will factor into their technology choices."

Schools now using Facial Recognition – getting pretty mainstream….

Schools Can Now Get Facial Recognition Tech For Free. Should They? July 17th, 2018 | Issie Lapowski | Wired
The stalemate over gun control “triggered” this man to offer free Facial Recognition Technology to schools as a solution to school shootings.
More and more, “techno-solutions” are finding their way into our world promising “solutions" that end up harming more than helping. (Think exposure to EMFs, privacy violations, cyber security risks, e-waste, energy consumption, conflict minerals and so on.)
This is not unlike the pharmaceutical industry which promotes a given drug to counter some health problem – but then a parade of drugs must follow to counter the ill-effects of the original drug.
Solutions need to be based on simplifying. We need a physical, metaphysical, emotional, and spiritual detox of ourselves and our world.

5g/IoT, smart cities and a hyper-connected world is an open invitation to nations to "do as they will” with our critical infrastructure, “smart" cities, driverless cars, etc.

The "Race to 5G” seems more like a "Plunge into Cyber Vulnerability and Ill-health.” Russian Hackers Reach U.S. Utility Control Rooms, Homeland Security Officials Say July 23rd, 2018 | Rebecca Smith | Wall Street Journal
Blackouts could have been caused after the networks of trusted vendors were easily penetrated
“They’ve been intruding into our networks and are positioning themselves for a limited or widespread attack,” said Michael Carpenter, former deputy assistant secretary of defense, who now is a senior director at the Penn Biden Center at the University of Pennsylvania. “They are waging a covert war on the West.”
"Once inside the vendor networks, they pivoted to their real focus: the utilities. It was a relatively easy process, in many cases, for them to steal credentials from vendors and gain direct access to utility networks.
Then they began stealing confidential information. For example, the hackers vacuumed up information showing how utility networks were configured, what equipment was in use and how it was controlled. They also familiarized themselves with how the facilities were supposed to work, because attackers ‘have to learn how to take the normal and make it abnormal’ to cause disruptions,’ said Mr. Homer."

Mobile 5G And Small Cell Legislation May 7th, 2018 | National Conference of State Legislatures
"Twenty state legislatures—Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida,Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia—have enacted small cell legislation that streamlines regulations to facilitate the deployment of 5G small cells."
This article gives a brief summary of each of these bills.
