Roundup – Causes Cancer and Other Diseases
In late March, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), published their assessment1,2,3 of the carcinogenicity of a number of organophosphate pesticides, including glyphosate.
Glyphosate was determined to be a “probable carcinogen” (Class 2A), based on “limited evidence” showing that the popular weed killer can cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and lung cancer in humans, along with “convincing evidence” it can also cause cancer in animals.
Glyphosate and glyphosate formulations have also been shown to induce DNA and chromosomal damage in mammals, as well as human and animal cells in vitro.
It’s worth noting that while recent years have turned up studies raising serious questions about the safety of glyphosate, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) raised the allowable limits for glyphosate in food in 2013. And, as reported by the Institute for Science in Society:4
“The amount of allowable glyphosate in oilseed crops (except for canola and soy) went up from 20 ppm to 40 ppm, 100 000 times the amount needed to induce breast cancer cells.” [Emphasis mine]
Root and tuber vegetables (with the exception of sugar) got one of the largest boosts, with allowable residue limits being raised from 0.2 ppm to 6.0 ppm. Meanwhile, malformations in frog and chicken embryos have been documented at 2.03 ppm of glyphosate.5

Says Roundup Causes Cancer
In the wake of the re-classification of glyphosate herbicide as a probable carcinogen by the IARC, the cancer agency of the World Health Organisation (WHO), support has poured in from independent scientists and agencies worldwide. The quotes listed below this article were collected from independent scientists in Argentina by the journalist Dario Aranda (English translation by GMWatch) in an article for the newspaper Pagina12.
For example, one quote is from Rafael Lajmanovich, professor of the Department of Ecotoxicology, National University of Litoral, and a researcher at CONICET, the main national research council of Argentina. Lajmanovich said, “The international scientific community has warned for years, backed up by studies, that glyphosate is carcinogenic. It is good that WHO has recognized this fact.”
The scientists who offered quotes had one main complaint: that it had taken the WHO so long to realise what they had long known about glyphosate herbicides.

Weed Killer, Long Cleared, Is Doubted
Thirty years ago, an Environmental Protection Agency committee determined that the popular weed killer Roundup might cause cancer. Six years later, in 1991, the agency reversed itself after re-evaluating the mouse study that had been the basis for the original conclusion.
Now the issue is back again, in an even bigger way. An agency of the World Health Organization has declared that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, “probably” causes cancer in people. One piece of evidence the agency cites is that same mouse study.

Roundup is used to grow GMO corn in Snohomish County. It is also sprayed on non-GMO wheat to dry it out. Roundup is a slow poison. It eliminates animal life where it is sprayed. It flows into streams and rivers where it kills fish. Opposing spraying of toxic chemicals is not a radical position. It is the spraying of these poisons that is radical.
